You’ve had a fulfilling career, honing your expertise in risk management and mitigation. Yet, perhaps, something still feels incomplete. Maybe you’re looking for a new way to leverage your skills and insights – a way to give back and make a broader impact. Becoming a Non-Executive Director (NED) might just be the step that bridges that gap.
Recognising the Possibilities
Early in my career, I had the good fortune to attend a forum on Women on Boards. This exposure opened my eyes to the opportunities for skilled professionals to contribute meaningfully at the board level, and it inspired me to take a long-term view of my own career. Over the years, I developed a solid foundation in governance, risk, and compliance, and realised that these skills were well-suited for board roles.
Taking Action: A Journey Towards Becoming a NED
A few years ago, I decided it was time to channel my professional expertise towards a higher objective. I took the plunge and invested in an Effective Board Member training course, designed specifically to prepare aspiring NEDs. This training proved invaluable, equipping me with the tools and confidence to pursue my first board position.
After completing the course, I actively sought out NED roles. It’s similar to job-hunting, but with a unique focus: various recruitment agencies and public platforms specialise in board appointments. I secured my first NED role with Global Girl Project, a charity that aligned with my passion for meaningful change. I’m proud to say that today, I serve as Board Chair – a position I initially obtained through a simple yet effective direct email. It has been a fantastic opportunity to volunteer my expertise, using my skills to make a difference in an impactful cause.
The Opportunity for Risk and Audit Practitioners
For those of us with a background in GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance), the opportunity to serve as an NED – especially on a Risk or Audit Committee – is both rewarding and well within reach. Boards are continually seeking qualified NEDs to join these committees, and your experience can bring valuable perspectives to the table. Charities and non-profits offer an excellent starting point, providing a range of board opportunities to build your experience. Over time, as you build your portfolio, you can explore compensated roles that further recognise your contributions.
